Puzzling Magenta Sludge on Remote Tasmanian Beach Raises Anxiety of Potential Phytoplankton Proliferation

Agencies in the island state are attempting to pinpoint a pink slime that has materialized on a remote shoreline, with a number of researchers concerned it could be an algal bloom.

"We have seen numerous of these outbreaks around the island of late," she added.

The scientist stated this organism did not create poisons like the organism involved in that devastating event, but it does consume tiny creatures and "many fish eggs", meaning marine life were particularly vulnerable.

"It's common to observe a outbreak of the organism after a outbreak of another organism, or something like a fish reproduction," she added.

Calls for Response and Safety Concerns

Lilly Henley, who collected samples of the rosy slime in Tasmania, said it appeared the potential proliferation had "grown significantly" and proposed the fish farming business was the probable cause, pointing to like situations overseas.
