New research indicates that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such drugs need to be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
