No fewer than 13 individuals perish and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
