Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, aside from his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
